Chichester-headquartered Covers Timber & Builders Merchants has swapped plastic bags for 100% recyclable paper bags.
Covers, which has been nominated as a ‘Constituency Responsible Business Champion 2019’ by Gillian Keegan MP, is a keen advocate of eco-friendly initiatives. These include using electric forklifts and solar panels at its depots.
The West Sussex business will also aim to limit the number of bags used by customers by checking during purchases that a bag is absolutely necessary.
“As a business we recognise how important it is that we play our part to protect our environment and do everything we can to be eco-friendly,” said Covers MD Henry Green.
“Our plastic to paper scheme is one small way we hope to improve our impact on the environment. We hope our customers will support us in our mission by only using a paper bag if absolutely necessary.”
Covers is not the only business in the sector looking to reduce its impact on the environment. Rapierstar cut its carbon footprint with a series of changes implemented at its HQ last year, while California-based pollution abatement firm Ship & Shore Environmental is currently targeting fastener businesses.
