Swiss Steel Group to lay off up to 50 employees

Swiss Steel Group has announced that its production site, Steeltec AG, will lay off a maximum of 50 employees.

In a consultation process initiated in November 2024, Swiss Steel Group announced 130 positions were to be reduced at Steeltec AG’s plant in Emmenbrücke, Switzerland, due to economic challenges. Originally, this would have required the termination of approximately 80 employees, but thanks to natural attrition and adjustments to organisational structures, the number was reduced to a maximum of 50 employees.

The layoff will take place in the first quarter of 2025. Swiss Steel Group added that measures will “strengthen the Emmenbrücke site in the long term and enable it to achieve its targeted goals”.

The consultation process included discussions about a political decision to temporarily reduce grid charges for the steel and aluminium industries. As previously stated, Swiss Steel Group and Steeltec value the Swiss National Council’s support for these industries in Switzerland and acknowledge its decision based on the information currently available. However, it is still too early to provide a definitive assessment.
